Grigore Ardelean, swimming coach on the Iza valley
Physical-education and sports teacher · founder of Aqua Iza

Until recently, a child from the Iza valley who wanted to learn to swim had to be driven to Baia Mare or Sighet. Grigore Ardelean, a physical-education and sports teacher, started Aqua Iza to change that: swimming lessons every summer, from June to October, in the indoor pool of the Recreation Centre, a few minutes from Dragomirești, Bogdan Vodă, Ieud or Vișeu.
At the pool he has one rule: no child is pushed. Water confidence comes through play, breathing and floating are learned in shallow water, and the strokes appear only once the child feels safe. He teaches every lesson, in groups of at most 6 children, so that each child is seen.
He does not promise champions. He promises children who float, breathe properly and come out of the water smiling, and parents hear at every stage what the child has learned and what comes next.

- Teaches every lesson
- Groups of at most 6 children
- Children from age 4

Safety first, then technique
We work progressively: first the water becomes a safe place, then come breathing, floating and gliding, and only at the end the strokes. Each child advances at their own pace, and parents hear at every stage what has been learned.
- Water confidence first, without forcing and without deep water at the start
- Breathing and floating before any arm movement
- Groups of at most 6 children, by age and level
- The same coach at every lesson, not an assistant instructor

How the first visit to the pool goes
We know the first step can be emotional, for the child and the parent. Here is how simple it is.
Message us on WhatsApp
We propose a group suited to the age and level, at a time that works with school and the drive.
Arrive 10 minutes early
So there is time for the changing room, the shower and a few minutes to get used to the place.
Swimming kit
Swimsuit, cap, goggles, towel and slippers. If something is missing at the first lesson, we manage.
Tell us about the child
Any fear, condition or previous experience helps us adapt the lesson. Nobody is pushed into deep water.
The first lesson is about getting comfortable: the child meets the coach, the pool and the water, at their own pace.
Answers to what parents ask
And if you have another question, we are one message away.
Who teaches the lessons?
Grigore Ardelean, a physical-education and sports teacher and the founder of Aqua Iza. He teaches every lesson, from the first water-confidence session to technique. We do not work with assistant instructors.
When do the lessons take place?
From June to October, while the pool of the Recreation Centre is open. From November to May the pool is closed. You can enrol at any time for the next season: message us on WhatsApp and we will let you know when we start.
From what age can a child start swimming lessons?
Beginner groups take children from age 4. Older children who already float or swim a few metres go straight into the group that matches their level.
Does the child need to know how to swim first?
No. Beginner courses start from zero: water confidence, breathing, floating, then the first movements. Children who already swim go straight into a technique group.
What should the child bring to the lesson?
A swimsuit, a swim cap, goggles, a bathrobe or a large towel, and pool slippers. We provide the kickboards.
What does the parent do during the lesson?
While your child has fun in the water, you can keep fit running: the Recreation Centre also has a gym with treadmills, bikes and weights. The gym has its own hours and fees, ask at the centre's reception. Or watch us from the poolside.
How long is a lesson and how many children are in a group?
A lesson lasts 60 minutes: 10 minutes of dry-land warm-up and 50 minutes in the water. Groups have at most 6 children, so each one gets attention. Lessons take place in the indoor pool of the Recreation Centre in Săliștea de Sus, from June to October.
How long does it take a child to learn to swim?
It depends on the child, but typically after 8–12 lessons a 5–7-year-old floats and covers a few metres alone, and after one term swims safely across the pool.
How do I enrol and how do I pay?
Message us on WhatsApp at +40 753 418 330 or call. We propose a group and a time, and the first lesson is about getting comfortable in the water. Payment is made at the pool, in cash or by bank transfer.
We are tourists in Maramureș. Can we come for just one week?
Yes. If you are staying in the area, we have an intensive course of 5 lessons in 5 days, designed for a holiday week on the Iza or Vișeu valley.
Still have a question?
Message us on WhatsAppThe first lesson matters most. Let's get it right.
Tell us the child's age and what they can already do in the water, and we propose a group. The first lesson is about getting comfortable, no pressure.
